McLaren 620R: from the racetrack to the road and back

It is road-legal, but its racing soul is intact. For this car too, we have P Zero slicks to bring out the best through the bends

This is a coupé coming to the roads directly from the world of competitions, with only 350 units available. It is the new McLaren 620R, the road version of the acclaimed McLaren 570S GT4, which has won numerous competitions around the world since its début in 2017.

The McLaren 620R brings together those sporting experiences in a version which has been approved for road use, and one which is ready to take its place on the grid at any time you like. This new sports supercar has all the characteristics of a competition vehicle, which allows you to enjoy the emotions of the racetrack as well as the road and vice versa.

THE MOST POWERFUL SPORTS PRODUCTION MODEL

The 620R adopts the same M838TE 3.8 litre V8 bi-turbo engine that equips the GT4, but with a significant difference in the delivery of its power: by freeing itself from the constraints of competition standards it was obviously possible to reconfigure the engine's ECU (electronic control unit) and the management of its turbo-compressors to obtain 620 HP and 629 Nm, making this the most powerful Sports Series model available today.

The car delivers a maximum torque of 620Nm and also scores the best lap time as well as the highest speed of a Sports Series machine. The reference performances are an acceleration from 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds and from 0-200km/h in 8.1 seconds. The top speed is 320km/h and at a speed of 250 km/h it produces an aerodynamic load of 185kg for the entire body of the vehicle, whereas the standing weight of the car is 1,280kg.

The excellent driving performances of the car on the road, for which McLaren cars are famous, are achieved also thanks to its carbon fibre core, a characteristic which distinguishes every McLaren model. It is also the adjustable aerodynamic elements and the components for the suspension derived from racing which allow the re-calibration of the engine in such a way as to increase its power and performances on the road.

PIRELLI P ZERO SLICKS FOR THE RACETRACK AND TROFEO R FOR THE ROAD

The performances are further enhanced by the Pirelli slick tyres which are for use exclusively on the racetrack, as these increase grip and performance during braking. Developed specifically for McLaren by Pirelli's racing teams, the slick tyres are designed to complement the braking system and suspensions derived from the world of competitions. They also provide an 8% increase in the contact area compared with the road tyre, thus increasing the lateral G-force and allowing faster lap times.

As is always the case when you choose Pirelli tyres, the braking performances are also impressive on the road, for which the factory-fitted 620R is mounted with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres measuring 225/35/R19 at the front and 285/35/R20 on the rear axle, marked MC. This is the first time that a road-legal car too, fitted with tyres measuring 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear, has been engineered in a way which allows it to be driven with slick tyres without the need for modifications to its structures or settings.  This means that if the climatic conditions are suitable, owners can, on arrival at the racetrack, mount a second set of tyres or change them and drive directly onto the circuit.

A CAR WHICH IS TAILOR-MADE

The 620R will be produced from January 2020 in only 350 units, all hand-built at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, Surrey in the United Kingdom. The colours of this new car are inspired by the racing GT4s – McLaren Orange (with the white racing stripes), Silica White (orange stripes) or Onyx Black (orange stripes) – to which can be added the competition numerals or those of the sponsors/partners, or you can opt for the even more exclusive livery inspired by the McLaren Senna GTR.
